Babies & Toddlers FAQs
Spotlight is excited to announce the lowering of the age range from 4 years old down to 6 months. We are committed to providing a professional path for your child to enter the industry and are on hand to help guide you through this journey.
We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions below. If this does not answer your question, please email questions@spotlight.com.
Why is Spotlight removing the age limit?
This change is a direct response to demand from all sides of the industry, including parents, agents, and casting directors. Many parents expressed a wish for their children to join Spotlight earlier, and casting directors frequently need to cast children in this age group. Bringing this work onto our platform ensures proper safeguards and moves casting away from less secure channels.
How does Spotlight ensure the safety and safeguarding of very young children on the platform?
Spotlight is a secure, trusted, and professional platform with a robust vetting and verification framework. Only children represented by a Spotlight-registered agent can join. Agents in the UK are unregulated, and Spotlight is among the few industry organisations with a strict vetting procedure for agents. Details of our Safeguarding Policy can be found here.
We also offer industry resources and guidelines on best practice from chaperones, to fees and licensing. For more information, please see our Young Performer FAQs as well as the Good Practice Guidelines for working with Young Performers.
How do we join?
Whilst we are not actively marketing this membership yet, it is possible to join provided your child is registered with a Spotlight-registered agent. We would advise speaking to your agent to help guide you. If they feel it would be beneficial for your baby or toddler to join, they will be able to provide you with a joining link.
Do I need expensive professional headshots for my baby or toddler?
Our research shows that babies and toddlers do not require expensive professional headshots. We are creating a library of support content with clear guidelines for parents on how to take suitable, high-quality snapshots at no cost and how to keep them updated regularly. These snapshots, along with self-tapes, provide a more accurate representation. Whilst not specific to babies, our article How to Take an Amateur Headshot has some great tips to help get you started.
What makes a good photo for babies or toddlers?
Since babies and toddlers grow so quickly, regular photo updates are essential to ensure the images accurately reflect their current appearance. Good photos should be clear, high-quality, and taken in good lighting, with their eyes clearly visible and looking towards the camera as much as possible. Avoid accessories like hats, sunglasses, large hair bows, or overly fancy clothing, and ensure there's no food on their face. The aim is for a natural look.
How often will I need to update my baby or toddler’s photos?
For babies the photo should be updated monthly and for toddlers, at least every three months. We also recommend that you add the date the photograph was taken alongside the name of the photographer to show when the photo was taken:
Will my baby or toddler need a showreel?
Baby and toddler won’t have a showreel in the traditional sense. It can be good to have to add short videos of them interacting naturally but it is more likely that you will be asked to send in an updated video when requested to ensure it is as recent as possible.
What should I put in the ‘About me’ section?
The “About Me” section is an excellent place to include information you want to highlight to casting professionals. You can add milestones such as crawling, cruising, or walking, and include details about their personality - whether they’re curious and adventurous, gentle and cuddly, or full of giggles and mischief. This makes your profile feel warm, personal, and ever-changing. Just ensure you keep it updated.
I am new to the industry, where can I learn more about the casting process?
Spotlight has always offered a wealth of advice and guidance for our Young Performers on our website, and we are actively working on building up our support content further to fully incorporate the differences between children and baby castings. There are stringent rules in place, especially around the hours babies can work and chaperoning requirements. This will be available in due course when we are ready to actively market this membership.
Is there a lower fee for babies and toddlers joining Spotlight?
At present, there is a singular price for the Young Performer age group. However, we may vary the cost of subscription based on user demand when we are ready to actively market this membership group. But as we know that some agents have been anticipating this change and are eager to get started, we are happy to accept entries early.
